It’s Saturday and on this day in history:
1981 "The War of the Worlds," the first live American radio drama in 25 years, is broadcast on NBC on Halloween
I chatted to AI about this:
The Original War of the Worlds Panic
The story begins with H. G. Wells' 1898 science-fiction novel The War of the Worlds, about a Martian invasion of Earth.
The novel was adapted into a radio drama by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre group, and broadcast on 30 October 1938 in the United States.
What made it remarkable was its format. Instead of sounding like a normal drama, it was presented as a series of realistic news bulletins interrupting regular programming: "Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our programme..."
Listeners tuning in late sometimes missed the introduction explaining it was fiction. Some believed a real invasion might be underway.

It’s Friday and on this day in history:
1894 Daniel Cooper patents the time clock
I chatted to AI about this:
A time clock (or punch clock) records when employees start and finish work.
The late 19th century saw:
Rapid industrialisation, large factories employing hundreds or thousands of workers, growing use of hourly wages.
Before time clocks, attendance was often recorded manually by supervisors, which was slower and more prone to error or favouritism. Mechanical time clocks provided a standardised, automatic method of tracking working hours.
One of the companies that became famous for time-recording equipment was the International Time Recording Company (ITR). ITR later became part of the company that evolved into IBM (International Business Machines). So there is a direct historical link between the humble factory punch clock and one of the world's largest technology companies.

It’s Thursday and on this day in history:
1675 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz makes the first use of the long s, ∫, for integral, helping to develop integral and differential calculus
I chatted to AI about this:
This is one of those seemingly small events that had an enormous impact on science.
The symbol wasn't chosen at random: it is based on the elongated letter s, standing for the Latin word summa ("sum").
Why an elongated "s"?
An integral is essentially the sum of infinitely many tiny quantities.

It’s Wednesday and on this day in history:
1449 Christian I is crowned King of Denmark in the Church of Our Lady, Copenhagen, establishing the House of Oldenburg (still rules the Danish throne today)
I chatted to AI about this:
To put that into perspective:
Christian I's coronation: 1449
Columbus reaches the Americas: 1492 (43 years later)
Shakespeare is born: 1564 (115 years later)
Newton is born: 1643 (194 years later)
Today: more than five and a half centuries later

I did some extra exploring on Sunday, posting on walls well outside the last 70. This caused me to get blocked, which I did not know was a thing. I was unable to post on any walls Monday morning. Sorry about that :(

It’s Tuesday and on this day in history:
1938 DuPont announces its new synthetic polyamide fibre is called "nylon"
I chatted to AI about this:
If found that there are many "bio-based" nylons to replace the pro-chemical version and was surprised. There is much, much more than I thought, or can paste here.
> Traditional nylon is made from chemicals derived from crude oil and natural gas.
Bio-based nylons use some or all of their raw materials from renewable biological sources such as:
Castor beans
Corn sugar
Sugarcane
Vegetable oils
Agricultural waste
The end product is often chemically very similar to conventional nylon
Example: Nylon 11 (castor bean nylon)
For applications such as fishing nets, technical outdoor gear, automotive components, cable ties and engineering plastics, castor-bean-derived Nylon 11 is currently one of the most successful bio-based replacements for petroleum-derived nylon. It delivers many of nylon's benefits while relying on a renewable crop rather than fossil fuels
