The story begins with H. G. Wells' 1898 science-fiction novel The War of the Worlds, about a Martian invasion of Earth.
The novel was adapted into a radio drama by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre group, and broadcast on 30 October 1938 in the United States.
What made it remarkable was its format. Instead of sounding like a normal drama, it was presented as a series of realistic news bulletins interrupting regular programming: "Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our programme..."

Before time clocks, attendance was often recorded manually by supervisors, which was slower and more prone to error or favouritism. Mechanical time clocks provided a standardised, automatic method of tracking working hours.
One of the companies that became famous for time-recording equipment was the International Time Recording Company (ITR). ITR later became part of the company that evolved into IBM (International Business Machines). The weather here is a bit wet and windy at the moment. The rebels here keep asking when they are going to get to see Stripes and Auntie Evelyn again. They keep moaning at me telling me they miss you both. They tell me all the time "Auntie Evelyn lets us have this and Auntie Evelyn lets us have that". Then it's Stripe and us used to go exploring during the day. And all I get all day is "We miss Auntie Evelyn and We miss Stripes". Maybe it's time for the rebels to get together again soon. You and Stripes are very welcome to visit whenever you wish too xx
