1661 Yachting begins in England as King Charles II defeats his brother James, Duke of York, in a yacht race from Greenwich to Gravesend

The concept of the pleasure yacht was imported from the Netherlands, where Dutch merchants and nobility used fast light boats ("jaghts"). The Dutch had recently gifted a luxury yacht named Mary to King Charles II in 1660 to mark his restoration to the English throne, sparking a royal fascination with sailing. £100 in 1661 is the equivalent of £13,000 today.

Put your hand on your heart. Feel that? That’s called ‘a purpose. You’re here today for a reason. Don’t give up and don’t give in. And above all, don’t let one or two dark clouds cover the entire sky. The sun is always shining on some part of your life. Sometimes you just have to forget how you feel, remember what you deserve, and keep pushing forward.
Keep in mind that we’ve all made mistakes. We’ve all made absolute fools of ourselves. We’ve let people take advantage of us, and we’ve accepted way less than we deserve. And sometimes, we too have given others way less than they deserve. Sometimes we let our priorities and our boundaries get ravished by the chaos of the day. But if you think about it, we’ve learned a lot from our bad choices, and even though there are some things we can never recover, and people who will never be sorry, we now know better for next time. We now have more power to shape our future.

Driving home today. As predicted, the Grum’s Day Trophy did not head my way on Friday, but it was good to see colleagues from my late teens to mid 20s, from the time before I moved away. Also, we had a great time with other friends a family. Back to work tomorrow.

Today is the annual golf tournament at Folke Golf Course, near Sherborne. It’s in honour of a former colleague, Mike Dennett known as “Grum”. He used to look after us when we were sheet metal apprentices at Wincanton Engineering in the 1980s.
In the late 1990s, after I had moved to East Sussex, he was playing at Folke and had a heart attack and, unfortunately, he died on the course.
So today is Grum’s Day. Last year my brother and I were part of the winning 4. That was the first… lol, and probably the last, time I will be part of a winning team. I am not a great golfer for sure :)
