Rapid industrialisation, large factories employing hundreds or thousands of workers, growing use of hourly wages.
Before time clocks, attendance was often recorded manually by supervisors, which was slower and more prone to error or favouritism. Mechanical time clocks provided a standardised, automatic method of tracking working hours. One of the companies that became famous for time-recording equipment was the International Time Recording Company (ITR). ITR later became part of the company that evolved into IBM (International Business Machines). So there is a direct historical link between the humble factory punch clock and one of the world's largest technology companies.
