There are dozens of ways to get started. Suggest reading the forums for detailed start ups. Basics early(below 2000 population) keep happiness above 20% try to buy most buildings in sets of 10 because the price goes up with each purchase. Get your culture up so you have access to more buildings. Begin creating your connections downline to trade auto pops with.(this is also your safety net if you screw up) Get your indexes ready to break the 2000 pop mark. Achieve at least the minimum recommended cash flow for the plan you are following.

keep the people in your city happy (people will entertain them othe rthings like building places like grocery stores helps keep them happy) collect culture points and make joba stuff for u'r people by birnging in businesses. make money.
