Ever Thankful
The unexpected death of my faithful refurbished MacPro late last year left me bereft. Without funds to replace it, and almost simultaneously undergoing oral surgery, I plunged into deep gloom.
But since the beginning of this blessed year of our Lord Two Thousand Twenty Six, I have experienced the healing of a year-long toe wound (Stay off your feet!!), the resolution of an infection in my mouth at the site of my surgery, and the wonderful gift from my daughter and son-in-law of this HP Chromebook!
I have missed this place and am so happy to be back!
Mayor Nan
My first connection was 16th DEC 2008, so that was probably my first day in Metropolis! Wow,17 years!.

It’s Wednesday and on this day in history:
Gold Discovered in California
1848 New York Herald is the first major eastern newspaper to report the discovery of gold in California
> > > Clint’s comment: The Trigger: Gold was initially discovered months earlier on January 24, 1848, by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, but news traveled slowly to the East Coast.
The Report: The Herald's coverage brought the discovery to a massive audience, setting off rumours and excitement that began drawing thousands of fortune seekers westward.
National Impact: Full-blown "Gold Rush" fever took hold later that year in December, when President James K. Polk officially confirmed the vast gold deposits in an address to Congress, leading to the massive 1849 migration of the "Forty-Niners."

1807 Robert Fulton's steamboat Clermont begins its first trip up the Hudson River
> > > Clint’s comment: The Maiden Voyage: The steamboat departed from New York City and traveled 150 miles up the Hudson River to Albany, New York, completing the trip in approximately 32 hours at an average speed of about 5 mph.
Impact: Before Fulton's successful run, sailing sloops took around four days to complete the same journey depending on wind conditions. Fulton demonstrated that steam propulsion was a reliable and practical mode of commercial transport for passengers and freight.
